Okay, so I gotta get in on this too. Current costume ideas...

  • A gothy take on Eris. This would have looked cool but a lot of the effect is centered in the hairdo, and I would have to cut over half my hair off for it to do what was required. Also, I would need someone to translate "for the angstiest" into Greek for me. And really, I'm not sure what clothing would be "right", and not too generic. Unless someone can give me a good "blueprint" for this, it's probably out of the running.

  • A Maenad. Quite appropriate by the dual reasons of me being Maenad Malk'Beeblebrox, and that Maenads were the mad nymph companions of Dionysus (aka Bacchus), so what better for a Bacchanal. However, we again run into the problems of hairdo, and what would look right to be wearing. Tattered clothing sounds good to me, as one might get from running drunken through the woods and tearing unwary wanderers to pieces, but I don't have any, and am not too keen on spending very much money on this (I'm already in the red this month).

  • Urania, Muse of Astronomy. Probably done up as lots of black/blue/purple with sparkliness. I might be able to pull off something appropriate, but the idea seems to have been a bit superceded by [livejournal.com profile] tyrsalvia's thought of going as Nuit.

  • A Lilim (err, what's the singular, Lilitu?), succubus, or other variation on the theme. The most plausible so far with the components I already have, including black and red batwings, black and red horns, and fangs, probably accompanied by tight satiny hip-hugging trousers, a cropped top, and heeled shoes, in overall black-and-red colour scheme. Just doesn't seem to be original or creative enough.

  • Selene. I don't know why, it just sounds neat, and I've always wanted an excuse to wear a silver crescent on my forehead. However, this sounds like it would require me to dress in white, which is scary as well as requiring some shopping, as I don't own any suitable white clothing.

  • A Kitsune, or otherwise anthropomorphic foxy thing. "Anthropomorphic foxy thing" is actually a costume I've been trying to assemble for some time, including one of these bad-ass "Reynard" masks. The mask wouldn't be going to the party - it's far too expensive to just up and blow the cash - but I could probably get by with ears and a tail, if I had a tail (which I don't, and the local "Native" beading-and-leather store where I could easily get one went out of business long ago). Also requires buying a few other clothing pieces, although in this case I would probably get later use out of them as well.

  • A faerie. This is just such the obvious cop-out choice in my case that I want to come up with something better if I possibly can.

I thought I had more ideas than this but the list I was writing is at home, and I'm not, so I may update this when I get home from work tonight.

Comments, ideas?

A Lilim (err, what's the singular, Lilitu?), succubus, or other variation on the theme.

I use Lilitum (cos that's the word that popped into my consciousness before someone keyed me into the lilim) as the singular, but it's probably lilitu.

And lots n' lots of cool ideas you've got for costumery ideas. For maenad hair, you could set your hair into small/ish braids, frizzing out most of it and leaving some braided, with leaves/feathers/shells/bits of stuff tied in. And a crown of ivy for good measure. Or just wild, frazzled + ivy chaplet.

First, my hair is not quite waist length, so doing anything with it besides a ponytail is a serious production.

The last time I put my hair all in small braids, I had a crimp hairdo from HELL until the next time I had a shower. I actually thought of that, plus inserting wires and standing it all up on end like we did in high school for the person who was playing the jester in "Twelfth Night", but it's really way too much hassle for a single night, and too big a price to pay in how bad I'd look the next day. "Wild, frazzled" would require backcombing and crimping, damage I'm not keen to do to my hair (plus I don't own a crimper) and I would definitely not relish trying to get all the mats and knots out the next day.

So thanks, but no thanks. This is what I meant when I said the looks require hair that I don't have.

Nice!

You thought of these yourself? Very nice, I love them! lol.

Very cool. I like the idea of you as a maenad, since that's how I first met you. It's easy to shred clothing, and I like the above idea about hair. I think you could do it pretty well with little damage, and a shower would really make it just fine.
