I don't get the whole "go up and down between at most 3 notes" thing as a vocal style in general, but more importantly, I am not at all sure why it bothers me in VNV Nation (which I used to think was da bomb y0, but now am mostly annoyed by with the exception of a few songs), yet it is somehow endearing for The Smiths...

Perhaps because VNV Nation is somewhat more stylistically limited to begin with?

The Smiths were always a contrast between the gothy so-depressed Morrissey, and the happy-pub-rocky Johnny Marr. Morrissey's solo work annoys me, mostly.
