Ah, ok. Nothing so neat:

"Margaret Campbell Pilcher has this to say about "Black David" Campbell:

        "David Campbell (called ‘Black David,’ because of his dark hair, eyes and complexion, and to, distinguish him from his cousin, ‘White David" Campbell, who was very fair, with yellow hair and blue eyes)..."

Their wives were half-sisters, thus apparently the need for distinguishing the Davids.

This is kind of interesting, because there's a female ancestor in the mix around this time who is McKean, or some name like that, who is described as being a "Highland woman of dark complexion". Maybe I am descended from small dark people! *laughs*

But I think I need to put all this down for a while. I am not any closer to what I wanted to know (except, ping ahril, that a Vaughn also shows up way far back ca. 1580s birthdates), and my head has been buzzing for like, hours on end. Way too easy to get overloaded. It's a feast of details. *splat*

There are many Vaughn/Vaughans, and not all are blood relations of mine. "Vychan" in Welsh (Beacain in Irish) simply means "the Little" or "Small in stature". It was often used to distinguish 2 people with the same first name from each other, John Bigg vs. John Little for an English example.

Surnames in Wales didn't get firmed up until sometime in the 1400's or even 1500's in some cases.

Still, I'm glad you're interested in finding out more about your own. it is most interesting reading it, as I am interested in genealogy as a subject in general, not just my own.

Yeah, so I read. I was just amused. I have Coppage/Coppedge/etc on the adoptive side, too.
