For those not in the know, this is the final step of all final steps. They are requesting my passport to stamp a special stamp in it that lets me stay in Canada forever and ever. The rest is logistics (moving, etc).
YAY!! Congratualtions!! I know this is something you have been working towards for quite some time. I will be VERY sad to see you go, but I am happy for the fact that you have almost reached an important goal of yours.
I'm planning to work my current job through the end of Winter quarter (Mar 31) and will probably be here for a couple months after that. I have to "land" by May 26th (I think it is?) but many people go back to their home countries for a few months after official paperwork "landing", to tie things up, and I will probably do the same. So I probably won't be "gone" until summerish. But whee! Thank you!!
Laybrinth on the 15th? I was going to do more work towards this, but now I think a celebratory is in order, if it's possible to do a celebratory labyrinth. :)
My mom is all like, "If you're going to Canada, then I'm going to Canterbury!" and I'm like um... that's its own immigration procedure, and I have NO idea what the ones for the UK are like... I think she was being facetious, but I bet she wouldn't turn down a visa if someone were just handing one to her.
1: And now, the politically correct version of our national anthem. [guitar strums] Both: O Canada! 1: That's it. 2: I can't believe that all we've got left of our beloved national anthem is "O Canada". 1: Well, all the rest of the lyrics were oppressive. 2: Oppressive?! 1: Absolutely. Give me a line. 2: "Our home and native land..." 1: Offensive to immigrants. 2: "True patriot love..." 1: Turns off small-l liberals* who equate patriotism with fascism. 2: "...in all thy sons command." 1: Every woman in the country cringes whenever she hears that. 2: "With glowing hearts, we see thee rise..." 1: Not everyone's a morning person. 2: "...the True North strong and free." 1: Oh yeah? With the GST and all the new taxes, what's free anymore? 2: "From far and wide..." 1: Offensive to fat people-- I mean, persons of size. 2: "...O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!" 1: Offensive to Quakers, pacifists, and the Green Party. 2: "God keep--" 1: Oh sure, offend the atheists! 2: What about "our land"? 1: The First Nations people argued that's premature pending the results of their World Court challenge on the issue of aboriginal title. 2: Well, I can see why they took out "glorious and free". 1: So, "O Canada!" pretty much sums it up these days. [guitar strum]
This is a song/skit by a Vancouver duo named "Local Anxiety". Apparently the issue of the political correctness of "O Canada" (at least in English) is a real if somewhat goofy one, and the lyrics have occasionally been altered to be more inclusive ("e.g. "true patriot love in all of us command" rather than "sons").
Heheh, no... this only showed up at my house on the 5th of January. I have to take some more passport-like photos before I can send it back to Buffalo, but yes they do recommend Express Mail.
Not exactly... the decision for me to go to Canada rather than the other way around was only made in about 2002. I didn't send the application until 2003.

You getting your immigration approved ... or ...
Me finally getting officially recognized as a member of my nation.
You win.
