Do any other Californians have any idea what is being referred to in the last panel of this comic? I am clueless as to what "nah brah" is supposed to mean and why it should be stereotypically Californian.

"No, brother," colloquially.

I have no idea why that's considered Californian, either.

Oookay. I don't think I've heard anyone ever say that. Everyone I know uses "man" and "dude", not "brother".

I didn't know you also read that comic. As for "nah brah", I was as puzzled as you are when I read it, and I lived in So Cal for 4 years.

It's [livejournal.com profile] enotsola's fault. :)

It's surfer dialect.

Everyone knows all Californians are surfers, right? /sarcasm

I didn't think Californians spoke Pidgin....

[identity profile] illuviel.livejournal.com 2004-12-16 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It could have been brought in from Hawaiian pidgin, where people do say 'nah' and 'brah' -- hence the surf culture tie in?

Could be. Maybe I don't spend enough time in Santa Cruz and/or coastal bits of Los Angeles.

[identity profile] dreamfall.livejournal.com 2004-12-16 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it is surf culture slang for "no, bro". It's originally hawaiian pidgin for the same thing. You don't hear it a lot outside of the surfing subculture really. The part of that area where I grew up hanging out ranged from the Dana Point area beaches (Doheney) up to the Redondo Beach area (I grew up near Long Beach until I was 15 then moved to Orange County near Newport and Huntington where they used to have the OP surfing championships).

[identity profile] gaelfling.livejournal.com 2004-12-16 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
and here I thought it was just some strange way of saying 'no bra'... ;)

[identity profile] starlightforest.livejournal.com 2004-12-16 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know WHERE you're getting your ideas about Californians. :)`

Californication...

[identity profile] gaelfling.livejournal.com 2004-12-17 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
well there is the media ;)

then again, we crazy Canuckleheads just plain have strange ideas, like legalised gay marriages, medicinal pot and universal health care, so thinking it's a way of saying 'no bra' is right up there (but I can see how it could also be 'no bro' as well, even is it's hard to imagine it used in a sentence like that)

Well, lack of bras sums up SoCal pretty well (after all, with all that silicone slowly calcifing out there, who needs underwire support?)
