I had an unusual dream last night. It took place in the back yard of my house, so I don't think it had an "underworld" component in it, but it definitely seemed to have some mystical themes in it. A lot of the "speaking" wasn't actually aloud, but more like a direct transmission of the words along with some emotive and image content.

The dream involved a witch of the "old persuasion" who looked nothing like you might expect her to in a story. She was middle-aged, Caucasian, somewhat fat, and had grey curly hair that was shoulder length. She wore a pink sweatshirt and light blue jeans with white shoes. (There was no particular evidence for her "being of the old persuasion" in the dream; it was a fact I simply knew, as though I had been given a background sheet on the setup of the dream before entering it. This is pretty common for me in dreams, actually.) Her first name was Karen and her last name at various points was Jackson, Jackman, and Oldman. She had with her a very small brown owl, like a burrow owl, although she referred to it as a "barn owl". It climbed onto her arm from the birch tree in the yard in a peculiar almost inchworm-like manner that involved first reaching out with its beak, and then hopping with both legs.

Later there was a part where it was gripping almost upside-down onto the top of one of the posts supporting the patio roof, and I was supposed to encourage it to climb onto me in the same manner. This was supposed to be some kind of test or acceptance on the part of the owl. The owl's beak was sharp and nearly punctured the skin on my right arm, but she did climb onto me. Soon afterwards she flew up into a small hole near the join of the roof and the eastern wall of the patio (the patio used to be enclosed on three sides; that wall actually no longer exists, and the hole was never there when it did - there were windows at the top of the wall, and had there been a hole, it would simply have gone to the outside, not been a place where an owl could have nested or anything).

There was a later part where I did something similar with a squirrel which appeared out of nowhere (or at least nowhere that I can now recall), climbing up my right arm, but Karen or another voice "transmitted" that if it should bite me on the back of the neck, I would "go nothing less than blind". (I think this may be a piece of mental junk as I had been reading about rabies in small mammals lately, and blindness I think is a possible effect of rabies.) I took the squirrel over to the patio wall where it ran up to... I don't know. It just sort of vanished out of the dream. (Maybe the owl had squirrel dinner.)

Either Karen or the owl herself "transmitted" at one point, "What we are doing in that Other Place is thinking of the Land, the Sun." Through the "knowing" I got that the sun being referred to was not the physical one (especially since there is said to be no sun nor moon in the Other/Underworld), but that it was being used to mean that Otherworld Light, Fire, and Lucifer all at the same time.

A visual that I no longer remember the exact context of is seeing a path trampled in the grass of the lawn (which was longer than it is in real life - maybe a foot or 18 inches high), directly east-west, with a small fork at the western end of it. The grass was all dewy, even though this was late afternoon or early twilight.

[edit: "...the Land, the Sun", lol. Not the Lan, as much as that might appeal to technopagans. Nice typo, self. ^_^]
