OMG. My dad just got laid off. This isn't as bad as it sounds; not only do we have plenty of savings to figure something else out, he's been half-hoping it would happen for several years now, as he hates the company and the people he has to work for, and has also been half-expecting it because of the various changes and mergers and whatever. The only thing really is that now he needs to work out private health insurance (not that what he got from his employer was great, because it was one of those plans where the employee had a monthly deduction as well as co-pays). But it's just so weird to me that it actually finally happened.

Yeah, no fun - something we don't expect our parents to have to go through. My dad was working at the same place for more years than I've been alive, and in December they told him he had a choice: laid off or work part time. He went to a four day work-week in January. Most likely, it will change again next year.
