OMG. My dad just got laid off. This isn't as bad as it sounds; not only do we have plenty of savings to figure something else out, he's been half-hoping it would happen for several years now, as he hates the company and the people he has to work for, and has also been half-expecting it because of the various changes and mergers and whatever. The only thing really is that now he needs to work out private health insurance (not that what he got from his employer was great, because it was one of those plans where the employee had a monthly deduction as well as co-pays). But it's just so weird to me that it actually finally happened.

wait... Is there a mandatory retirement age and is there a pension plan?

If there is, and it's 65, his insurance issues could be resolved in rainbow colors by finding the right agency to report this to as a potential age discrimination.

No and no. They laid off a bunch of other people at the same time because they are basically dissolving the arm of the company he works for.

You all are taking this way too seriously. He's glad to be out of there. I was only remarking on how it felt weird to me after hearing him talk about "am I going to quit today?" for the past, like, three years.
