I don't understand the logic of telling someone you are unfriending them. If you don't want them on your friends list anymore, why not just do so quietly, and if they want to take issue with it they can? Everyone has their reasons for unfriending, but if it's not a mutual falling-out (so the cause is clear), then why make a point of telling someone why they have now displeased you or you are no longer interested in them?

In a similar vein, why tell someone who has friended you that you are not friending them back, if they didn't post in your journal saying "hey please add me"? For an analogy, imagine that you are at a party. You see someone whose outfit you like, and walk over to them and say so. You ask them what they think of your outfit and they say "Actually, I don't like it very much." Well, you did ask. Now suppose that you simply catch eyes with this person across the room, but don't say anything. They later come up to you and say "I noticed you looking at my outfit. I don't like yours." Doesn't that seem rude or mean somehow? Uncalled for in any event, I think...
