Deleting a filter does not change the security of the posts posted in it. The filter no longer exists for future posts, but the post itself is still viewable only by the same people it was ever viewable by. I suppose this makes some sense, not accidentally exposing posts and whatnot, but it makes it a right pain in the ass to convert posts to public if you decide you don't want to have a filter anymore, because you have to go through them one by one, a task made even more heinous by the previously-lamented lack of ability to display only the post's in one's journal that were made within a specific filter.

that was kind of a long sentence.

If one assigns each of the posts in a filter to a corresponding Memories category as one creates them, one can then view a list of all the posts in the Memories category and thereby the filter as well. I would suggest naming both the filter and the Memories category the same thing for ease of use.

I update with a client rather than on the website, so that's not as elegant as I'd like, but it's a pretty clever idea.

Odd, I thought posts whose filter was deleted became friends only. ugh.

Definitive answer, from the FAQ: (http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=102)

If you want to delete a group, highlight its name and click the "Delete" button. You will need to confirm the deletion by clicking "OK". Any entries filtered to a deleted group will still have the "custom" security, but with no group selected, so they will only be visible to you. If you later recreate a group with the same name, the entries will not automatically be filtered to that group. You will need to edit the security level on each entry if you want other people to see it.

So, no. They all go to Private entries, until you re-allocate them to one of your new groups.

OK. There was no way to tell that from the post itself (I did a test post), because all I saw was the lock, and when I edited the post, the security level was still "Custom..." with no group selected. This doesn't immediately parse as "Private".

No, I have ti admit I've run into the same issue this week, as I have old entries that I no longer have the filter-group for. I wasn't aware they'd become private, until I checked the FAQ. That was annoying because I then had to go through each entry and put it into a new group
