You know what the net needs?

"Tone" indicators on email and newsgroup and board posts, just like livejournal (and other such things) have "mood" indicators.

This is probably not an implementable feature in many cases but I think it should become an item of netiquette, or something.

Ok, but mood is not necessarily the same as tone. For example, I would say my mood right now is "good", or "slightly drunk", maybe. Whereas the tone of this comment is "slightly doubtful, perhaps disagreeing, but in a spirit of honest testing of ideas, and with not even the slightest spite or disdain for the original poster [you]".

I think I'm just fantasizing along the lines of the old "women need an LED readout on their foreheads" thing.

I understand. You need to begin a new standard of stating tone... (For example, emails or posts can begin with a tag that indicates that the tone is detailed at the end of the message)
...and then start a website and sell T-shirts.
