I wish there was something that could be built into a building to utterly nullify cell phone signals inside it. Then I wouldn't have to tell ten people every day that we don't allow cell phones in the library and they have to turn them off, and no they can't make outgoing calls either.

Also, there's a kind of paint that blocks wireless network signals that may also work to block cell signals... not positive it would work for that, though.

WTF? Why would they make it illegal to block a cell phone signal? That totally sucks.

Well, we could always implement a strip-search-at-the-door thing, and some kind of "coat check" for the phones themselves... :)

A few years ago, I read about someone developing a metal mesh backed wallpaper that did exactly that, it was proposed for fancy restaurants and similar places with no cellphone signs.

Whatever bricks our house is made of, does the trick. Until recently, I had to stand near a window toget any signal. Then they put up a new mast at the end of the street and suddenly it works. I think I preferred it before.

I'd be happy with a cell phone jammer. They don't allow them on one of my commuter bus lines, but people still just go to the back, and talk away. And of course, doing it discreetly would be too much to ask.

Cell phone jammers exist, but they are pretty expensive from what I understand, and also unfortunately illegal in the United States. Not that illegality stops people. An Israeli company, Netline, (http://www.netline.co.il/Netline/) for instance, makes one.

I wouldn't want to do anything illegal! I felt a bit guilty today when Connie and I used the express (12 items or fewer) line with too many items in the cart. :-)

There's always the low tech solution for mobile phone pests. Repeat their end of the conversation, or comment on it, loudly. Once, on the bus, a woman was having a conversation, and a man sitting across the aisle, one row behind her, kept telling her again and again that speaking on the cell phone wasn't permitted. She eventually gave up trying to have her conversation.

LOL, that's great. Somehow I don't think it would be appropriate for me to do, though, being an employee of the library and all.
