Despite what Infocom may have told you, a grue is apparently a crane, whether in the sense of construction equipment or waterbirds. (It appears to be French.)

A grue is a crane, in the sense of the waterbird, in french. It is also a crane, in the sense of the construction equipement, but I have ever only heard of that word being used in reference to the bird among french family members.
