Why is it you can pick up a basic PC mouse for $5-10 - even a basic optical one for $15-20 - and the Mac mice that match the ones we have here in the lab (optical, but corded) are $49?? How is it at all cost-effective to replace the broken ones we have at that kind of price? Sheesh! :P

Because Macintosh is evil. :)

(Damn propietary hardware.)

They're not proprietary at all. Unless those macs are really really really old (pre-orginal iMac), they should work fine with any USB mouse you'd like to plug into them.

Fine if you have any USB mice - we don't (only PS/2 mice), although I suppose they could be bought fairly cheaply. I tried plugging one of those in via a PS/2 to USB adapter and it didn't work. (functionality of port was verified by plugging in one of the Apple mice)

Most of the lab is PCs (~75 give or take), but the Macs (16) are there, and when we're impacted on a waiting list, every station counts. It's silly not being able to use them just for lack of mice, but I had no idea the mice were so bloody expensive.

Kensington makes a two button/scroll wheel/optical/corded USB for $19...or was it $14?

Fry's is your friend.
