eta 1/9/2021: Argh, Facebook apparently won't let the images be embedded without valid URL signatures and they've all expired. Well, click through to the maker's page and you can see.

Aww, why did I have to find these after the maker has apparently gone out of business?

AAAAAAA???? I actually?? GOT THESE???

Let me unpack that. Angela hasn't kept regular stock for ages, for whatever reason. In 1999-2000 you could just go buy a pair whenever you felt like it (though the designs have been diversified and improved; the old pair I have are heavier because framed with steel wire instead of flat aluminum, and not this neat "convertible" style you can wear in a down position), but I think she only works on commission these days because everything is always sold out and the site really only functions as a gallery. All you get are these "flash sales" of ONE pair of whatever it is and they always come available at 7 or 8 in the morning. (I wonder if she's really awake then, or if Shopify lets you pre-set a time for something.) I really wanted the blue version but the flash sales are really competitive. Like, you think getting a room at the DoubleTree for Pantheacon was hard, this is worse. Even being prepared with credit card info in a scratch file to copy and paste quickly (as has been my technique for PCon) did not get me success last time - 7:01 AM was too late (although maybe that one was extra crushed because of the Dark Crystal connection). But today I randomly woke up at 7:53 so I thought, wotthehell archy, I might as well try for the 8:00 AM availability. I was astonished that after failing on the blue ones I was able to nab the "diamond fire" ones, because by that time it was like 8:04. I would have thought that someone else out there was doing the same thing at the same time.

Really awesome articulated, possibly remote-controlled motion? costume wings.

DO WANT

(anyone up for a trip to the Netherlands where we beg, borrow, bribe, or steal these?)

Unfortunately, the supplies involved seem to include a parasailing kite, which nevermind all the engineering involved (these are motorized; he's just controlling the timing of flapping) sounds expensive.

Does really drive home just how big of wings you need on a human-sized body (never mind a dragon) to enable flight in Earth gravity, though.

edit: See also Man Claims to Fly With Custom-Built Bird Wings; Analysis of the Human Birdwings, which discusses whether there's anything in the video saying it must be a fake based on camera motion and some of the physics; and Man Flies Like a Bird Flapping His Own Wings (Update 6) on Gizmodo, which has a bunch of updates with people saying both "OMG fake" and "this is feasible".

This really doesn't look like 3D CGI to me, though it could possibly be a physical rig with cables painted out.
