As you may have noticed if you're reading this on LJ, I've turned off commenting on the crossposts. I am waffling over whether to stop crossposting entirely (except for the occasional PSA). However, for the moment I am not in a rush to entirely delete my journal, because it occurred to me that 1. that breaks memories links and it always annoys me when that happens, and 2. I don't want to orphan the community I own (though I have backed it up to DW) without discussing the community's future with its members, and that needs to get handled.

As I see people and communities make their own announcements about moving to Dreamwidth, I am gradually removing them from my reading filter on LJ and adding them on DW (not unfriending, just tweaking of reading lists).

Everyone's probably heard by now about how the Russians are coming, the Russians are coming -- that is, that LJ physically moved servers to Russia as of about 2 weeks ago -- but if not, here's a few relevant links:

http://siderea.livejournal.com/1330197.html
http://siderea.livejournal.com/1330106.html
http://rahirah.livejournal.com/695706.html (with more links to further reading)

As for me, I imported both my journals to Dreamwidth and started crossposting from here to LJ somewhere pushing seven years ago, so no change for me there, although I will be chuffed if people currently reading me on LJ decide to start reading me on DW instead. I don't have any immediate plans to delete my LJ entirely, or delete all its posts ([personal profile] frameacloud says [livejournal.com profile] ljsec still works for doing that task in bulk), or even to stop crossposting or turn off commenting on LJ for right now.

Currently doing some friends list maintenance, mostly removing:

1. deleted journals
2. people who haven't posted in five million years, especially if we were not mutuals to begin with
3. a few that I don't really need to have friended both here and with [livejournal.com profile] shyfoxling
4. some people whose usernames I don't recognize and who I can't really figure out who they are or why I would have friended them from reading their journals, and who often overlap with #2

Nothing personal. Well, nothing that's a big deal, anyway; I guess a bit personal in a couple of cases I've learned since whenever I originally friended them that I don't see eye to eye with, but I don't think it would be news to them. And if "enough time has elapsed since I last had any contact with this person that I no longer feel comfortable having them friended" is personal, then that too in some cases.

Also adding a couple of people that I don't know why I didn't have them friended and was surprised to see that was the case in the manage list.

Unlike every other time this kind of thing happens, I appear to be one of the people currently affected by lost comment notifications. I turned LJ inbox notification back on so I can get them that way (normally I have that turned off and only get by email because I hate having one more damn thing to have to periodically clean out), but I may have missed something in the past few days or a week. If you've been waiting for a response from me on something and wondering why I'm ignoring you, please link me.

If anyone out there has been vaguely interested in creating a Dreamwidth account but not interested enough to bother to look at [site community profile] dw_codesharing to get a code:

...we're going to try a little experiment. For the week of February 21 - February 28, creating an account on Dreamwidth will not require an invite code. You'll be able to register an account without needing a code -- just by visiting the account creation page.

What's this? LJ added an actually nifty new feature?

Sort community by poster: Have you ever read an awesome entry in a community that left you longing to read more of that user's posts? Now you can view entries by a particular user in a community by appending "?poster=exampleusername" to the end of the community's URL (e.g., http://community.livejournal.com/frankandmeme/?poster=frank). We'll be adding a link to make this feature more accessible. Please let us know in comments where you'd like to see the 'sort by poster' link (e.g., under Communities in the nav bar, in the hover menu, etc.).

It's pretty cool - as one commenter remarked, it's good for finding old posts of yours in a community so you can archive them, if you do that. Would have been very handy for me updating picture links in preparation for letting either this account or [livejournal.com profile] shyfoxling expire.

(This would be a cool one to duplicate on DW.)

I was always going to pay for this account anyway after my [livejournal.com profile] shyfoxling account expired next month (so that strictly speaking I was not double-paying for a given time period - [livejournal.com profile] arethinn expired in May, and [personal profile] arcanetrivia here is already paid), but I have wanted to edit comments so many times today that I decided, screw it, what's a month of paid time.

Also, moar icons. Woot.

Just trimmed a few friends on LJ, mostly inactive journals and/or ones I wans't sure why I had friended in the first place anymore. If you believe I may have defriended you in error, please wave at me.

!@)(#*&)(@#*. Despite being assured by I think it was [personal profile] foxfirefey (or possibly [staff profile] denise? i can't remember) in some previous post, it seems that reimporting my journal from LJ (I was trying to fetch new copies of a bunch of posts I edited to contain new image links) did in fact duplicate the bulk of my posts. Not all, and I can't figure out what the pattern was, and of course I hadn't set it to reimport comments since I thought the new post content would be copied over the existing posts, so now the new ones lack comments and I lose them if I delete the old posts which have the wrong image links (where those exist). I wondered if maybe it was because the importer considered those posts to not be literally the same ones and so imported fresh copies, but it duplicated a bunch of stuff that I didn't touch, too.

Great botheration!

(I'm wondering if the best solution might be to delete all my posts -- how, I'm not sure; I imagine LJ-sec won't work with DW -- and reimport afresh. Manual deletion of the duplicates is driving me batty.)

Note to self: If you crosspost something custom filtered via DW's crossposter, everything is hunky-dory. If you crosspost via Semagic, DW does not honor the filter names (probably because Semagic isn't passing it what it wants to know, same as Semagic can't deal with loading my DW access/subscription lists) and though it knows it ought to be "Custom" security, the actual security level appears to be just Friends.

This is no big deal with [livejournal.com profile] elethian where the only filter I actually use for access (besides the occasional plain friendslocked post) involves someone who is only on LJ and so I don't actually crosspost those here anyway (although there are some in the archives due to being imported in the past). But on this account I need to remember that if I want to lock anything to other than "friends" level, even though I have the identical access filters here (obviously), I can't do it through Semagic as is my usual wont.

poo.

Someone get that DW/LJ/IJ client written, OK? I hate posting from the web. :P

edit: Oh! Apparently it also doesn't respect tags, which I could have sworn it did. Well, crap. This really isn't working.

Still had a bunch of random folks friended on this journal from when I hadn't yet set up a separate Harry Potter journal. I think y'all and I are all mutual friends on [livejournal.com profile] esmestrella, either here or on IJ... I think...? Well, anyway, it didn't seem pointful to keep such people friended in both places, was all. *tidies*

I think I am unfriending a few people and moving some others to the "friended but not commonly reading" list. Sorry guys, nothin' personal, but I am just getting deeper and deeper in time-debt and need to scale back my reading commitments. As it is, if I don't read LJ like twice a day I get seriously behind, and, uh, I just can't get behind that. Between three journals I have 631 friends and communities (albeit some skim-over overlap between LJ and IJ) and it's just overwhelming me.
