btw, does anyone have any idea what I might have done wrong about Firefox (well, Pale Moon, but it's Firefox under the hood) or Flash or whatever that I can't play embedded YouTube videos like this one on my home computer? At work and on the laptop it works fine; on my home desktop I just get a vague "An error occurred; please try again later" message and I have to actually go watch on the YouTube site (where it works fine).

Try downloading the appropriate player for your specs from here: http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html.

No, that's not it. I've already tried unin/reinstalling various versions of Flash to no avail. (Anyway the "specs" are the same, enough for this purpose, on all three computers in question.)

Normally the downloading and installing the debugging version will fix it. I'm out of ideas. :(
