enotsola points out that one can now buy a terabyte hard drive for ~US$70-80. Sooo... basically you could store all of Geocities for a few bucks.

(And Yahoo had to erase all this why, again?)

I think it's less that they "had to" as much as that they didn't want to bother with it...

I know, but they'd already stopped any kind of maintenance or tech support, so having done that it seems such a trivial thing to throw away given that they can't have needed the "shelf space". *shrug* I guess they just wanted to be able to ditch that part of their procedure manual/etc. associated cruft that accumulates, which people don't often think about.

I used to have a 10 MB hard drive in the XT clone I used in junior high school and part of high school. I thought the 500 MB one that was in our 486 (25 whole MHz!!) was huge and hot shit.

It wasn't the filesize, it was the bandwidth. Server *activity* was the issue, not the amount of hard drive space it took up.

(I agree that it sucked, and still sucks.)
