As a young teen, I was in Egypt, and out in the desert one night (shortly before a very cheesy sound & light show at the pyramids), I saw truly the Milky Way for the first time, and I remember it as only slightly less vivid than that.
Indeed. I had not realized that when people talked about the Milky Way, they were talking about something that was quite so vivid and obvious once you were in an area with absolutely no clouds and very little artificial light. That's my single most striking memory of looking at the sky.
