Ye gods and little fishies, this is apparently temperatures in Australia right about now.

For the Celsius-impaired, 54 C is 129.2 F. And predictably, things are on fire (although, apparently, fortunately not yet resulting in too much damage). The person who posted this on my other journal flist said "the reality of climate change has led the Bureau of Meteorology to add two new levels of temperature to our national forecast charts." O.o

It's not quite that bad: it was only 50.5-ish in the middle – that band is for 50-52. The 52-54 band hasn't been used yet, thank goodness!

There is a set of bad conditions that have led to a so-called heat dome over the continent, with record national temperatures over the last week. Today has seen a very welcome change for the south east with coastal and southern winds prevailing, but we're told it won't last. Thankfully, it's meant to not be quite as severe when the next heatwave strikes. I'm afraid that any climate change deniers out there can now literally see they are wrong. Fingers crossed it gets people acting to cut carbon emissions!

And for a laugh, this was the poll in the major Sydney broadsheet today:
Poll: How did you sleep in Sydney last night?

Terrible - I tossed and turned all night
I struggled while it was hot, but was OK once it cooled down
I got to sleep OK but woke up freezing
No problems - I don't mind the heat
No problems - I had air-conditioning/a fan

I don't think we will, historically it's topped out just over 50 here and the current trend has us going up from historic highs, but not by a big leap, so fingers crossed Death Valley can keep its record! I am already missing the La Nina of the last few years, though!

I've had 47 in the Middle East and 44.5 in Sydney: as long as it's dry it's bearable, but when it was 41 and hugely humid in Sydney the other year it was HIDEOUS and there was no relief from the feeling of breathing in soup.

I'd be right there with you. The week of -30C as a high that I experienced in Wisconsin in the late 80s was way too cold, but I'd vastly prefer that to anything over 40 C - those sorts of temperatures make me feel like I have a bad flu.

It regularly gets to 40c here (Dallas) in the summer. I think it's gotten to 44 or so a couple times in the last couple years. I have a hard time imagining 50+.
