resist, resist!

I must be what passes for a Luddite among my extremely geeky peer group:

1. I do not do MySpace.

2. I do not do Facebook.

3. I only use IM for talking to [livejournal.com profile] enotsola.

4. The big shocker: I do not have a cell phone or equivalent. (This always seems to throw customer-service types for a loop. They stutter amusingly for a moment while they skip to the next personal-information question.)

when we filled out the application for renting this apartment, there were 3 blanks for cell phone numbers, but not a one for email address.

I'm pretty damn close:
  1. I do not do MySpace. In fact, I rarely even so much as even look at a MySpace page, because they often make me wish I had a spoon around that I could stab out my eyes with. I recently tweaked my Firefox userContent.css file to alert me when a hyperlink leads to a myspace.com URL, just so I can avoid them more easily.

  2. Okay, I have a Facebook account. I occasionally fiddle with it a little, but I'm by no means a serious aficionado.

  3. I only use IM at work, for talking with co-workers.

  4. I do not have a cell phone, and never have. I had a pager for a while, as required by my sysadmin job.
On the other hand, as someone who runs his own web, email, and DNS server out of his own home, I don't think anyone can quite call me a Luddite.

(While we're at it, the word "Luddite" should properly be reserved for people who are actively hostile to technology, and especially to technology in general — not simply people who don't feel the need to personally buy in to a particular technology, work-style, or gadget.)

It's dull, you twit! It'll hurt more!

I am actively hostile towards these things. For a cell phone, I hate the idea that someone might be able to get a hold of me at any time, out of my control, and demand an immediate reply. Also, like you, most MySpace pages make me want to stab my eyes out with a spoon, so again, active hostility.

That said, I was being a little tongue in cheek with the word.

[identity profile] digitalsidhe.livejournal.com 2007-10-08 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)

It's dull, you twit! It'll hurt more!

That's the point. Especially since it would still hurt less than looking at the MySpace page.

I am actively hostile towards these things.

Oh, okay then. Cool. I've just heard the term used too many times by people who simply mean "Not a serious geek; not making maximum use of technology."

See, those folks need to quit diluting the term, so that when you use it properly, I'll understand you the way you mean it!

Erm, it was a quote?

Oh. Erm, I don't recognize it? :)

Sherriff of Nottingham in Prince of Thieves. I forget the context.

I won't go to myspace. Ever. For any reason.

I have never bothered even looking at facebook.

I have a couple IM names technically but I never ever log in.

I don't have a cell and I'm THRILLED at that fact. I barely answer my home phone.

[identity profile] lizzydear.livejournal.com 2007-10-08 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey kiddo, I'm right there with you. I finally gave in on the cell phone ,but only because it was required for my job (RN on call). I absolutely refuse to text message; I don't IM, I too have never been to Myspace (aka pedophile central) or facebook and can't see myself going there anytime soon. Joining livejournal was a huge leap for me, done with much profdding from the misha.

[identity profile] starlightforest.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
I was all like, "kiddo? who is this person calling me kiddo?" and then I noticed the name-drop of [livejournal.com profile] the_misha and looked at your icon and your journal and I have FINALLY worked out who you are that you have been commenting here now and again. Duh. Hi Liz! (I like run-on sentences!)

guess who

[identity profile] lizzydear.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
sorry. I thought you knew from the name.

And don't fret-I call lots of people "kiddo". oddly, most of my friends are either 10+ years younger or 10+ years older tham me. Hmmm.

It just seemed an awfully familiar thing to be calling me if you didn't actually know me, you see. :)

[identity profile] winterredwood.livejournal.com 2007-10-08 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I have MySpace, Facebook, and a cell phone. I can see how MySpace could get annoying- it does have a teenybopperish quality. I like Facebook better because I have more control over my privacy there.

I almost never answer my cell phone unless I'm expecting a call. I let everything go to voicemail and I call 'em back if I feel like it. I figure it's my phone and my choice to answer or not.

Me too; me too; me too (substituting [livejournal.com profile] ladyzephy for [livejournal.com profile] enotsola, and I have one but it's never turned on. :P

Well--I do not do *any* of the computerish things--
--I Do have a cell phone, to take with me at dog-sitting---apart from that I *Leave it at Home* --Not a difficult trick--or you turn it Off

--and, the land line has no phone on it---It is just dial-up for the computer--so basicly I still have only one phone

I neither do MySpace nor FaceBook in protest of the stupidity that is oh so commonplace on these sites. They are horrible and not worth the upkeep.

I used to YIM and AIM tons of people. My buddy lists have shrunk drastically in the past couple years. There are so many people who want to do less conversing and more age/sex/location checks that I just can't deal with them all. Even those above the net fodder sometimes only want to argue or condescend in order to feel smart. Usually those who have something worht sharing are soft spoken or at least well spoken (walk softly and cary a BIG BRAIN!), and when they do argue they back up their opinions and remain courteous.

I love the Internet but hat the people on it. LOL Just kidding!!!!! I've just been feeling cynicle all day!
