Today, I thought of the only other thing I had changed since the last time the scanner was known to work, which had slipped my mind last night. The night before, I was playing around with the Services control panel (this is Win2K) and disabling or changing to "manual" things that I didn't think I needed. One of these was "Still Image Service", which I have never known exactly what it does. It was "Still Image Monitor" under Win98, I think; I had killed its task/process sometimes and never noticed a difference, so I remained clueless. Well, apparently it has something to do with TWAIN, because when I was going down the list of services starting them to see if I could ferret out the right one, the scanner went "zzt! zzt!" (the scan "head" moving) when I started that one. And lo and behold, programs were then able to actually open TWAIN and acquire again. So I switched it back to "automatic" starting. I still don't know exactly what that service does, but at least it wasn't something more serious going wrong.

If anyone out there uses Winamp 5, can you tell me if I am just missing where the setting for "don't minimize visualization window when player is minimized" is, or if there really isn't such a setting in WA5 (bother!)?

Also: hello, Winamp? There's plenty of non-gothy music in that playlist. Why don't you shuffle more, rather than playing twelve tracks of Haujobb, Wumpscut, Apop, Razorblade Monalisa, Deep Red, and randomly inserting Weird Al's "Waffle King" into it all?

Ok, this is ridiculously hot, even from what little you can see in the auction photos. ("Pirates of the Caribbean Yaoi Doujinshi", Will x Jack) As if Johnny wasn't pretty enough, now he has to be drawn in a feminine-looking manga style? O.O

Whoa! I appear to have made two people's linkiness today on account of my saying things of coolness ([livejournal.com profile] tyrsalvia linking to my latest money post, and [livejournal.com profile] gremliness to my silly "nanigans" pun). [livejournal.com profile] shadesong linked me the other day for my "ERIS' Extreme Makeover!" thing. Did I get a coolness bonus from the deities this week, or something?

When was the last time you...

1. ...went to the doctor?

Umm.. last year in early December when I thought I might have had a urinary tract infection.

2. ...went to the dentist?

About this time last year. I made the mistake of putting down that I thought I had been told once that I might have a heart murmur on some form they asked me to fill out, and though they'd been cleaning my teeth for six years, they suddenly refused to do so because there's apparently some 50%-fatal bacterial infection that one can contract if one really does have a heart murmer and has one's teeth cleaned (it can be introduced through the roughness on the gums or whatever). In a bit of a snit I declined to go get the antibiotic prescription they wanted me to take so they could clean my teeth, and I've never gotten around to getting the EKG to prove I don't have a murmur, so.

3. ...filled your gas tank?

Uhh... sometime in the week before PantheaCon? Not sure. I don't drive that much so I only fill my tank on average every three weeks or so.

4. ...got enough sleep?

You're funny.

5. ...backed up your computer?

Uh... well, I backed up a bunch of stuff when I installed the 80 GB hard drive, but my original intent to mriror all my mp3s on the old 20 GB (having erased Win98 from it and all) has kind of fallen by the wayside. Due to physical limitations, the two hard drives are on the same IDE port, which slows things down somewhat when copying from one to the other, and I'm not keen to sit around for however-many "Windows minutes" while it copies 10GB from one to the other. I have only smaller stuff actually backed up, like my "wisdom" directory, which contains tons and tons of pagan/magical information and writings, a small portion of it being my own stuff that I'm working on and would be unhappy to lose.

I posted this in reply to a comment, but I thought I'd post it out here since it amuses me so much.

About a maid I'll sing a song
Sing rickety-tickety-tin
About a maid I'll sing a song
Who didn't have her family long
Not only did she do them wrong--
She did every one of them in, them in
She did every one of them in

One morning in a fit of pique
Sing rickety-tickety-tin
One morning in a fit of pique
She drowned her father in the creek
The water tasted bad for a week--
And we had to make do with gin, with gin
We had to make do with gin

Her mother she could never stand
Sing rickety-tickety-tin
Her mother she could never stand
And so a cyanide soup she planned
The mother died with the spoon in her hand--
And her face in a hideous grin, a grin
Her face in a hideous grin

She set her sister's hair on fire
Sing rickety-tickety-tin
She set her sister's hair on fire
And as the smoke and flame rose higher
Danced around the funeral pyre--
Playin' a violin, -olin,
Playin' a violin

She weighted her brother down with stones
Rickety-tickety-tin
She weighted her brother down with stones
And sent him off to Davy Jones
All they ever found were some bones--
And occasional pieces of skin, of skin
Occasional pieces of skin

One day when she had nothing to do
Rickety-tickety-tin
One day when she had nothing to do
She cut her baby brother in two
And served him up as an Irish stew--
And invited the neighbours in, -bours in
Invited the neighbours in

And when at last the police came by
Rickety-tickety-tin
And when at last the police came by
Her little pranks she did not deny
To do so she would have had to lie--
And lying, she knew, was a sin, a sin
And lying, she knew, was a sin

My tragic tale I won't prolong
Sing rickety-tickety-tin
My tragic tale I won't prolong
And if you do not enjoy my song
You've yourselves to blame if it's too long--
You should never have let me begin, begin,
You should never have let me begin!
