Welcome one and all to the annual fundraising Garage Sale for Magical Acts, featuing altar items and unsual household goods.

When: Saturday and Sunday May 15th and 16th 9:00am to 3:00pm
Where: 934 41st street (between Market and San Pablo)
Why : to help fund our next project "Heretics, Harlots and Heros"

I'm guessing, since unspecified, that this is in San Francisco. I'm not sure who "our" is. I'm kind of tempted, but I've driven up to the city two times already this week (last Saturday, and yesterday), and the shopping and gas for another time really aren't in my budget. Figured other locals might be interested, though.

This page about the correlation between a state's average IQ and whether Bush or Gore won the state in 2000 is interesting. Also on the page is a comparison of jobs lost and gained under various presidents, showing the Democrats come out on top. One can't just take those numbers at face value, though. Roosevelt tops the list with 5.3% gained, but there was this little thing called WWII responsible for most of that, and I'd hardly say it could be attributed to his being a Democrat. Likewise, Hoover is at the bottom with 9% lost, but he was president during the Depression, and there was a lot more going on than just his being a Republican, including stuff no one could have controlled no matter what party they were ("Dust Bowl", anyone?). Still, interesting to read.

I think really the correlation is more in the way that higher IQ's tend to get more involved in academia and perhaps broader, more liberal thinking, not "Republicans are dumb" exactly.

Does anyone know how (if) I can get the Macs in our lab to see the printing queue that's on the (Windows) server? Right now they are all accessing one of our two printers via LPR, and I would dearly love to have print jobs sent from the Macs actually appear in the controllable queue on hydrogen, rather than the direct printing whether we like it or not (and whether the patron pays for it or not). The queue is set up via "printer pooling" of the two printers attached to the server.

I feel this should be possible because there was a time in the past when the Macs did show up in the queue. However, those were days of different hardware and software (PowerMacs with 8.6, an NT server, and 3 Apple LaserWriters; today we have iMacs and G4s with 9.2.2, a Win2K server, and 2 HP LaserJets), so it may be that it's not possible with the current setup. This also seems like it should be possible if only we were running 10.3, but we're not, and that's not something I can change, so that's moot.

Any ideas?
