Paradice

I saw this game at a local New Age bookshop last month. Looking at their website now clues me in to why they call themselves "See Through Games" -- they make pieces out of recycled clear resin -- but the one I saw at the store was made of sustainable woods.

The game board is a forest with four types of trees, each of which supports a forest spirit and a human. The two players are the Giver and the Taker. Only the Giver can win by bringing the four human pieces together "eye to eye", so the Taker is trying to become the Giver. The Giver can re-plant trees and the Taker can cut them down, which is involved in the mechanics of how the two players switch places.

The wood version was kind of expensive, IIRC (~$70?), but it looked very nice and I thought this game might appeal to some of you tree-huggers out there. ;)

Giver and Taker roles may come from the work of Daniel Quinn, in his books Ishmael and The Story of B. Interesting stuff... questioning the form our 'civilization' has taken.
