I am currently sipping Douglas Fir eau de vie* mixed with elderflower liqueur (St. Germain), thinned with a little water. The eau de vie is green (naturally green, that is) and the liqueur is pale gold; the water made the mixture "louche" a little, so the overall visual effect is like a weak absinthe. It tastes, well, sort of like you might think: herbal, sweet, and flowery. All things considered, I feel kind of like I am having a more-fey-than-thou moment.

The eau de vie was a pricey gamble which fortunately turned out not to be basically upscale PineSol, as I feared it might. It does have that piney-fresh sort of evergreen flavour, but it's subtle and it doesn't assault your eyes and sinuses like the vaguely similiar flavours in gin. (Not that I dislike gin, but it doesn't play well with many others.)

I'll need to track down some St. Germain. While Douglas Fir doesn't sound down my alley, I adore Elderflower...

I'm already familiar with St. Germain (and even have a very small amount of it in stock). What's this Douglas Fir eau de vie? Does it have a name? What's the bottle look like? Where would one find it?

Clear Creek Distillery, which also does a nice apple brandy. I bought it at BevMo, myself, so it shouldn't be that hard to come across. See http://www.bevmo.com/Shop/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=21916 (although I think describing it as "shocking" green is a bit strong; the colour in the photo is fairly accurate).

That sounds really tasty, actually. Then again, I don't find Buckley's horrible, and I've found one gin, Hendrick's, that can be drunk either neat or preferable on the rocks.

What are you talking about? I drink Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire neat. ;) I just understand that many people don't like that pungent evergreeny flavour and the way it can burn your eyes if you exhale into the glass, so I pointed out that this was nothing like that. Very refined actually.

Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire? Wow... Hendricks is, from what I've been told by one of my roommates who also does drink the two aforementioned beverages neat also, smooth. Then again, I don't mind the evergreen flavour either...
