Count me among those very troubled by LJ's new user agreement. It's not surprising that it happened, but... yeah. I was not thrilled with the situation since January but now I'm feeling a rather stronger urge to up stakes entirely. At the very least, in the short term I am seriously considering stopping crossposting or at least turning off commenting.

I'm not sure what to do about the LJ community I own, though. I'm sure there are tools to just export it to a static file, but what I would really like is to import it to the DW community of the same name. I don't own that community, though, and despite poking elven_ranger about it a few times the agreed-upon transfer just has never happened. So I'm torn over maybe creating a new DW community just for a landing place, or what.

In other news, since Verizon and Yahoo closed their deal, I'm now also more acutely concerned about how to back up archives of Yahoo groups. I can't imagine that service is long for this world.

Transfer the comm to DW, even if you need to change the name.

One comment on another blog pointed out that, according to Russian law, a journal may be considered "adult content" for just mentioning the existence of gay people.

And by the new terms, not marking a journal "adult" when it's got "adult content" may be a violation of Russian law.

Russia has no freedom-of-speech allowance in its laws.

(Backing up Yahoo groups has always been a hassle, but there are kind of ways to do it. Sort of. Backing up tumblr is pretty much impossible, though.)

What I've done is open up posts from the group archive page, either sorted by date or by thread (date if I want to save everything; threads if I'm willing to save "just the important things") and save out the HTML for the threads. Slow PITA process, but better than losing the content.

For people with more tech skills than me, Archiveteam.org has a few options - a python and a perl script that might work.

Oh lawdy. Doing it by hand is simply not feasible for some of the groups I'm thinking of. One of them has possibly more than 60,000 messages over 18 years. (Hmmm, funny, I thought that one used to have its Onelist or Egroups message history prior to that also stored, since Yahoo took those over. Apparently not anymore.)

I'm probably not enough above the average bear to do something with python or perl, but I'll take a look.

I'm exporting everything to DW as I type this. As soon as that's done. my 15-year-old permanent LJ account will be so much digital vapour. It sads me, to be sure, but... yeah, fuck this.

I hope there's some way to manage the community imports, though preliminary reports aren't good. Fingers crossed.
