Dec. 10th, 2004 12:41 pmRemember a while back I asked about why I wasn't seeing margin space in Word documents in Print view, and someone said "Check view settings, View white space between pages"? It turned out he was right, but I still hadn't figured out how it had gotten set to off in the first place, since I hadn't gone in and unchecked the box. Well, I just found out how. It can be turned on and off by clicking on the grey space that is the background behind the "page" at the bottom or top of the page. I probably managed to do it by mistake when clicking to place the cursor or something. How annoying.

bloody tree-killers!
Dec. 10th, 2004 02:50 pmI was awakened at about 10 this morning (at least they waited that long) by grinding and chomping sounds of machinery. After giving up on trying to sleep til 11 regardless, I looked out the front window and determined that it was a wood chipper a short ways down the street. Fine, OK. Tea. Bagel. My mom came home at 11 and opined that the City was trimming the magnolia trees that line the street, rather than something going on at a private household. Fine, OK.
When I walked out the door to go to work at 12:10, I could see that it was very definitely a private operation, since the huge (~40 feet high? I dunno, I never measured it), broad tree just beyond the neighbour's house, that shaded our front yard in the late afternoons in summer, had been stripped down to just the trunk, with clear intention to remove it entirely. It was strangely pointy and "whittled" on top, like a huge stake or pencil driven in the ground upside-down.
I sure hope the tree was diseased, because if they're just "landscaping", well, murder-death-kill.

Dec. 10th, 2004 07:06 pmTeacher punishes student for telling another student his mother is gay and explaining what "gay" means
Blerg.
Also, I know the child is only 7, and therefore in the first or second grade, but I had way better spelling than that when I was 7 (granted I was in the third grade then, i.e., more reading and writing experience). "Recess" could be a hard word, and the "t" on the end of "kept" might be something needed to be learned by rote depending on how people pronounce it in that neck of the woods (my dad says things like "kep", "swep", etc for words that end in "pt"), but he should at least be able to spell "said" and "words", I think. I wonder if his teacher is working with him on that rather than paying attention to what a "bad word" "gay" is.
