WTF does FTW stand for, anyway? I keep meaning to ask.

"For the win". I'm not sure what piece of internet/gamer/whatever culture it comes from, although I imagine it's related to the use of the phrase in sports and racing ("they're neck-and-neck on the home stretch, and it's so-and-so for the win!").

FTL = "for the lose" in the same context.

I think "for the win" predates the internet and has its origins on the old game show "Hollywood Squares", as in "I'll take Wally Cox for the win."

(doh, I wasn't logged in)

I knew it predated the internet; what I meant was, I don't know where on the internet it first entered the common 'net lingo.

And hey, what's wrong with "Wakky" Cox? ;)

Oh. Well, I can't help you with the real world/net life import date. Sorry.

(I wonder how many people these days would know who "Wally Cox" was if I just mentioned the name out of the blue)

The natives of 1996 apparently looked like [livejournal.com profile] ashrangildowan and said, "Lay it on me, home skillet!". Who knew...

I've been known to use that phrase.
