Take our country forward

A lot of activist rhetoric talks about "taking our country back"--from the bankers, from the warmongers, from the straight-white-Christian-male oppressors who benefit from patterns of kyriarchy and discrimination, and so create subtle (and sometimes, not so subtle) laws to reinforce those habits on all levels.
...we're supposed to gloss over the oppressions, overt and covert, of those eras, and presume that, if we All Get Our Act Together, we will be able to give *everyone* all the privileges that the ruling classes of those times had.
Well, one, we can't, and two, we don't want to. One, the privileges of the wealthy-and-powerful of those eras were all built on oppressions.
...There is no "back" that has what we need. We need to look to our history to find all the *good* things, and figure out which of them can be worked into our future.
...If we're going to have a government "of the people, by the people, for the people," we need to take our country forward until we have it.

A company run by former American International Group Chief Executive Maurice "Hank" Greenberg Monday filed a $25 billion lawsuit against the United States, claiming that the government takeover of the insurer was unconstitutional.

In its complaint, Greenberg's Starr International said that in bailing out AIG and taking a nearly 80 percent stake, the government failed to compensate existing shareholders. It said this violated the Fifth Amendment, which bars the taking of private property for public use without just compensation.

http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2011/10/kristen_christian_bank_boycott_bank_transfer_day_occupy_wall_street.php - I've actually been contemplating what this movement or boycott or whatever you want to call it suggests for some time (to pull my remaining money out of Wells Fargo and put it in my credit union; currently it's split about 30/70, I think), but not particularly because of ideological reasons or annoyance with increasing fees. (I usually have enough on deposit that I escape them, so they're mostly invisible to me, although that might change soon... better reread the latest dispatch from them.) Rather, simply because my credit union offers better interest rates. Not great (is there any such thing these days?), but better, as in existent, whole numbers in front of the decimal point instead of fractions of a percent that are just about as good as sticking it under the mattress.

Supposedly this is from "United States Bankers' Magazine" in 1892. I tried to find a direct original for that and couldn't; closest I came was from an 1893 book: "the Chicago Daily Press recently published a dispatch from Wall Street, dated March 21, 1892". But the text itself seems to be for real, whatever exactly was its original provenance. (If that link doesn't work, try searching Google Books for the phrase "At the coming Omaha Convention to be held July 4th 1892". The title is Imperialism in America.)

We must go forward cautiously and consolidate each acquired position, because already the inferior social stratum of society is giving unceasing signs of agitation.

Therefore, prudence dictates to us a line of conduct that seems to give in to the will of the people, until the execution of our plans be well-enough established for us to be able to declare our intentions without having to fear any organized resistance.

When, through the law's intervention, the common people shall have lost their homes, they will be more easy to control and more easy to govern, and they shall not be able to resist the strong hand of the Government acting in accordance with the orders of the central power of imperial wealth, under the control of the leaders of finance.

Our top leaders are perfectly aware of the truth. They are presently working at establishing an imperialism of the capital to rule the world. But while they are implementing this plan, they must keep the people busy with political antagonisms.

We'll therefore speed up the question of reform in the custom rates by the political organization called the Democratic Party; and we'll put the spotlight on the question of protection and of the reciprocity by the Republican Party.

By dividing the electorate this way, we'll be able to have them spend their energies at struggling amongst themselves on questions that, for us, have no importance whatsoever, and on which we only touch upon as instructors of the common flock.

It is thus that, through discreet acts, we can maintain what was so generously projected and executed with such a remarkable success.
