Why am I so bloody cranky lately? Is it just the big delay getting in Sunday night (they delayed the plane 35-40 minutes waiting for some people in Customs to make the connection, so with that and being at a different gate in SF and a mix-up with the baggage carousel, I didn't actually get home until 1 AM) plus the fact of having to jump right back in at work with not enough students and no time to re-adjust? Or is there something else going on? Blah. Sorry if I've snapped at anyone in a more bitter way than usual today.

Obviously, viewing only the friends-only posts is the simplest example, but I would like to be able to view only the posts in my "magic" filter, for example. I think the easiest way to do this in the current paradigm is to have separate journals with their friends lists corresponding to the filter members. (Ugh.)

Must be some kind of backlash against all that fat and salt I had to eat at
enotsola's. ;)

oilcan! oilcan!
Jan. 4th, 2005 05:03 pmI have set up a kind-of-appointment to have my car's very first 6-month/5,000-mile maintenance thing done at the local Toyota dealer. This is so weird because I don't think we've ever taken any car we owned to the dealer for service of any kind. We do everything from changing oil to brake jobs to replacing radiators and head gaskets to removing and installing transmissions ourselves - pretty much anything short of actual machining of parts like brake rotors and cylinder heads (although my dad's been known to manufacture other tools and part substitutions on the fly in the garage!). However, we figured that I ought to let them do at least the first couple of maintenance things themselves just for the sake of warranty protection, so that if something goes wrong, they can't say it was my fault for not doing it right.
I wonder how much they're gonna stiff me for. Surely more than the $10 I'd spend doing it myself. Ugh.

mystery mail
Jan. 4th, 2005 10:08 pmWhile I was in Canada I received a postcard (at home) dated December 15th from someone who was in France at the time. It is addressed to "Val Freytag" and reads:
"Dear Val --
How can these women eat croissants daily and stay slim? We are having a great time. Tony and I are Metro experts and are going all over the city. Paris is decorated for Christmas and is beautiful and is bringing out all the Christmas shoppers. See you soon --
Love
Kathy"
The address is perfectly correct except that it omits "Drive" after the street name; no misdelivery or guesswork on the part of the Post Office here. I have no idea who this woman is or how she managed to mess up an address for mailing to a person she clearly knows, at least well enough to say "see you soon". The handwriting looks to be that of a woman at least in her late thirties.
I have no clue at all.
