Just 6 weeks left to work and 3 more after that until moving day. O.o Sounds like it might be time to get off my fanny about reserving a rental car, storage facility, moving trailer, and all that business.. funny how "three months" is so much bigger of a number than "two months".

I was looking around my room last night thinking about packing, and I have really no idea how I am going to manage to bring all my pairs of wings with me without damage. Fortunately my most fragile pair is already there because I entirely forgot to bring them back to California last August after having left them there on purpose in March. Three other pairs fold flat and will probably be fine. But two other pairs (who needs five pairs of wings? ...not enough, says I!) are all bumpy and lumpy in shape and had to be mailed carefully. I hestitate ("...thou shalt NOT hesitate!") to try to put them in a moving truck. Hmm.. maybe I should just mail them again. It would be kind of pricey because of the unwieldy size of the package, but it might be safer.

Really though, the wings are the least of my worries since they are not actually breakable nor terribly valuable. I'm a lot more concerned about all my electronics, because I don't think I have any of the original packaging anymore. (Should have kept the monitor box when I got a new one on warranty last year.. d'oh!) It's going to take tons of bubble wrap. And that large television I got from [livejournal.com profile] the_misha and [livejournal.com profile] tiggrrl is going to be a big fat hassle since I don't even know where I'm going to get a big enough box. (Do you suppose I could hit up a Circuit City or something? Surely they must throw away tons of TV boxes.)

I have been trying to think of a word in a certain phrase for months now and it is still completely eluding me. The phrase is "Where is the ______ in that?" (where "that" = taking some action) The missing word means "benefit" or "gain" (not "fun", but fun is not excluded as a possible benefit), and the phrase means roughly "What the heck is the point of doing that? What would anyone get out of it?" My brain is telling me that the word starts with a k-sound, but it is not "coin", "cachet" (makes no sense anyway), "kickback", "cool"... though, too, I may be entirely wrong about the initial sound, perhaps through mixing up one phrase with another. But it's not "sense" either. My brain is also hearing it in a David Lister voice, so that may be a possible clue, but that could also just be a brain fart. Anyone?

Edit: [livejournal.com profile] saint_durrutti sez "percentage", which is sounding good the more I roll it around in my mouth. I do still wonder where the Lister voice is coming from. I think maybe he uses an entirely different "where's [or perhaps "what's"] the ____ in that?" phrase at some point...

So now that the phrase has been determined to probably be "Where's the percentage in...", the actual post that I wanted to use it in:

Where's the percentage in being a really rude, abrasive som'bitch? I know I can get pretty tart myself when I am annoyed with someone for not knowing something (regardless of whether it was reasonable to expect them to know it), which is also bad. But when I have negative opinions about something, I try not to frame them in extremely strong language, nor to be completely dismissive of $WHATEVER. In general I hope I successfully avoid coming across as an all-purpose obnoxious jerk, although I probably do so on accident sometimes.

But why would someone want to do so on purpose, or if not precisely "on purpose", to happily cite "that's just the way I am" as a supposed excuse for generally mean behavior? (For the otherkin out there, "I can't help doing $CRAPPY_ACTION because I am a $SPECIES" is a variant.) I know have no right to dictate others' personal communication styles in situations I don't control, but I really don't get why this makes it "okay" for them to be harsh all the time. It just seems like an incredible waste of energy to be constantly aggressive and I have very little will or desire to engage with it. (Usually I drop out of such arguments after a few exchanges, which sometimes provides fodder for sarcastic "awww, too-sensitive couldn't take the heat! you've just realized that you're WRONG, you just don't want to admit it" sorts of comments, but there's nothing I can do about that; why keep banging my head against a wall, really.)

To me it generally reads as a lack of any basic respect for the thing or person under discussion and for others in the conversation. Why should being addressed in a noncombative manner be a privilege that has to be earned by being "good enough" or "impressive enough"?

In short, I know I am basically a weak, bland personality and this world would be pretty dull if everyone were in fact as, ah, let's say "temperate" as I am, but goddamnit, why do some people have to be so fucking nasty?

Somebody ([livejournal.com profile] r_monoxide?) recently mentioned California poppies, so here you have some pictures I took today.
