The Gift of the Bees: an Inclusive Beltaine
I love Beltaine. I love flowers. I love early summer. I love sex. I love fertility and fruitfulness. What’s not to love?

Weeeeeell, if you’re a queer person in Pagan community, Beltaine can be fraught with conflict and ambivalence. Simplistic understandings of Maypoles, Bael Fires, and related ceremonies leave us with heterosexist, patriarchal ideas of what the holiday is about.

[...]

One ritual revisioning Beltaine fertility happened at Four Quarters Interfaith Sanctuary’s Beltaine Main Ceremony, May 2006. This ceremony used bees and flowers, rather than human beings of any gender, as the model for fertility and love. ... The ceremony reminded participants of everything that bees make possible. We symbolized their powerful place in ecosystems around the world through the symbolic use of bee pollen (East), a beeswax candle (South), mead (West), and honey (North). In the repetition of “the gift of the bees!” we reminded ourselves and one another of our dependence on beneficial pollinators, particularly bees.

(again, DW, sorry for the repeat. gah come the fuck on... crosspost... this is like try number four now.. *annoyed*)

(possible trigger warning: I'm going to talk about the blog post and not the comic, but the comic seen by following the link may be triggering for suicide content, particularly a specific method I won't mention here. I certainly found the last panel more personally disturbing than funny, even granted it is black humor.)

From http://hijinksensue.com/2011/12/05/comfortably-numb/

When you see a commercial that starts with “Doing [insert extremely easy, every day task] is hard! Don’t you wish there was a better way?” DO NOT BUY THAT THING! No one wants it. No one needs it. Stop buying stuff for people just because you think you have to. Make something. Frame a photo of the best day you ever had with that person. Take them on an adventure. Knit a freakin’ scarf. Give them something that doesn’t have a direct monetary value and isn’t available at Best Buy. Otherwise you might as well just write how much cash you were intending to spend on a piece of paper, give it to the other person, take their slip of paper and work out the change owed.

Damn right. I have been trying to edge my family this way for a while. There's hardly anything any of us need anymore and hardly any place to put anything we merely want. I like the aesthetic appeal of gifts under a tree, but a couple per person is surely enough? I am not so great about this kind of restraint when it comes to [personal profile] enotsola to whom I sometimes wish to GIVE ALL THE THINGS, but when my mother asks what I want for Christmas or birthdays I always tell her there's really nothing anymore, and yet she comes up with things anyway. They're not "bullshit" gifts like mentioned in the post - she does actually know what kinds of things I like - but as I said, we're just plum out of room by now. The "bullshit" gifts have tended to come from [personal profile] enotsola's family. I'm glad I am not going there for Christmas anymore because I sometimes got some doozies from his step-dad's family who had seen me, what, twice in their lives? yet apparently still felt obligated to buy me things. His mother has been kind of hit or miss too. I would rather just get a card, honestly, than a t-shirt neither of us can wear or a tchotchke we wouldn't have chosen for ourselves. (The coasters with dragons and Jack Skellington on them have been very useful and appreciated, however.)

Also:

ALTERNATELY: What’s your favorite “As Seen On TV” product to hate? Mine is the “Make a giant cupcake” pan whose commercial starts out with “Regular cake is boring…” NO IT IS NOT. FUCK YOU. CAKE IS AWESOME.

Note to self, seen in http://rootandrock.blogspot.com/2011/02/inspired-by-pagan-meme.html:

I celebrate the passing of the seasons in binary. "Samhain" and "Beltain", though occasionally "Imbolc" and "Lughnassadh". And the rest are feasts of fun and joy with the locals, not for Work. For me, it is about the push that drives the wheel, and I really only feel two.

Our Christmas cake this year. (Fruit cake with marzipan and rolled fondant) I think it's a little more level on top than the last two times, since this time I bothered to stick toothpicks in to guide the knife when trying to slice the top off flat, but Ace of Cakes material I am not, lol.

the voices of the dead.
are you with me, grandfather?
do you hear me, spirits of the past?
is the night hurrying because of you?

the answers are not in unhoped for words
but the images of night: the cloak,
the stillborn wind ripping brown leaves,
rain on the sidewalk, clay earth
becoming mud, mute stars,
the tree sighing as it dies, the ending
of the day, the halo of dawn,
the nighttouch, the wolves’ howl,
the heart, the soul of the dark.

I know it's a tad late for some of these Halloween-related things, but stow them for next year? I have a few leftover Halloween things which I think I may post in "bonus" posts over the next day or so. I'm planning to continue this "autumnvent" in general to the 30th day, which I think is the 9th of November, so there are still some more autumn/harvest/Thanksgiving-related things to come.

Our Halloween porch display by [livejournal.com profile] starlightforest ;)

I am almost afraid of the wind out there.
The dead leaves skip on the porches bare,
The windows clatter and whine.
I sit here in the quiet house, low-lit.
With the clock that ticks and the books that stand.
Wise and silent, on every hand.

I am almost afraid; though I know the night
Lets no ghosts walk in the warm lamplight.
Yet ghosts there are; and they blow, they blow,
Out in the wind and the scattering snow.
When I open the windows and go to bed,
Will the ghosts come in and stand at my head?

OH HAY I just noticed. Since Daylight Saving Time now ends on the first Sunday of November, that means that it's November 1st this year. In other words, that magical extra hour you get at 2 AM when the clocks jump backwards to 1 AM will be late on Halloween night. Talk about your liminal times...

[livejournal.com profile] starlightforest and [livejournal.com profile] enotsola presence @ $HALLOWEEN_OR_SAMHAIN_EVENT forecast:

Shindig of probably lots of weirdos @ Silmemar: 10%

Shindig of mostly kinda normals with some admixture of geek types @ Rabbit's Foot Meadery: 55%

Actual Samhain thingamabop @ Stone City: 5%

Staying home watching The Nightmare Before Christmas and maybe some bad vampire films, answering the door for the 5 whole children who will actually show up to our house, and probably getting drunk: 30%

My mom being at Cynagua Coronet because some woman she knows is getting (SCA-)knighted and she wants to be around for the vigil or the ceremony or both, I forget, and therefore who knows when the heck she will be home that evening which may affect timing and/or possibilities of some of the above plans: 100% Apparently she's not going to the vigil, is leaving hell-ass early in the morning to make it to Woodland (?) for 10 or 11 AM court, and is planning to be home before sunset because she doesn't want to get stuck among people (possibly such as ourselves) going to their evening partying destinations.

It's a little lumpy and imperfect, but not bad for a first attempt at the whole fruitcake-marzipan-fondant spiel, I think. (Yes, I know those are oak leaves, and not holly. Using the cookie cutter we had was so much easier than trying to freehand them. Deal.)

[Poll #1149943]I'm a "stale and chewy" gal, myself. (Er, you know what I mean.)

ETA: I actually got one "What's a Peep?" answer, so for the benefit of the British (I think she is), and anyone else: Peeps are an Easter candy (although they also now come in other holiday themed shapes too), marshmallow coated in coloured sugar, in the shape of chicks, (flat) bunnies, or (flat) eggs.

Even the website talks about eating them stale, LOL.
