Geek A Week

So, after some well-placed phone calls and e-mails to some folk versed in geek culture, I give you my new challenge, Geek A Week. Every week, for the next 52 weeks (that’s a year to you and me), I will be trying to make contact with a different prominent figure in the geek culture. After I make contact with them, I will then draw a trading card of them.

#5 is the Rifftrax guys which is how this came to my attention (Satellite News). Pretty awesome!

In other CT news, the titans have announced five more live show cities and dates:
FEB 13-14-SAN FRANCISCO-Marines Memorial Theatre

BAH! No! You cannot do a Cinematic Titanic show in San Francisco then! That's the first two days of PantheaCon! Bastards!

In related news, last month [livejournal.com profile] enotsola and I took part in a writing session for a shorts episode of Mystery Fandom Theater 3000, and will be going to another in a couple of weeks. I feel kinda leet.

I'm kinda in love with metaquotes right now:

It was reported during the campaign that President-Elect Obama had read all of the Harry Potter books to his children. Then came the picture of him with his Apple laptop with the Pac Man decal. Finally, it's been reported that he's an avid collector of Spider-Man and Conan comics. Naturally, this caused some Chuck Norris-style riffing...

Obama thinks Romulans have a cooler language than Klingons.

Obama has promised to keep the white wolf on the endangered species list if--and only if--White Wolf brings back their old World of Darkness.

Obama will not talk about the mysterious "Masked Moor" who appears at SCA wars, flirts with all of the women, drinks all of the mead, talks about hope and change, and then proceeds to kick everyone's asses in one-on-one combat.

Obama wants to start his inaugural address with "I have come here to govern wisely and chew bubble gum."

Obama does not believe in interfandom fighting. Kirk versus Picard? Joel versus Mike (or the modern version, Cinematic Titanic versus Rifftrax)? He is above that. He wants to bring fandoms together, not tear them apart with fearmongering and wank.

This weekend has had a high proportion of fail. Read more... )

But there was one small highlight, and that was that we did achieve our primary objective in going to Super-Con in the first place: Getting to see Joel, Trace, Frank, and Josh (J. Elvis) and also Wil Wheaton. Tipping slightly in the "fail" side of things was that the MST dudes seemed really wiped, and not terribly enthusiastic about being there, but I suppose there are few things that can compare to Joel Hodgson saying "Hi, I'm Joel" and shaking yours and your husband's hands. ^_^ Read more... )

I watch zippity-doo-bugger-all television these days, so I had to make up the difference with book fandoms. This is one of those "pick x answers without looking at the questions; ready, set, go!" types of memes.

1. Hitchhiker's Guide, 2. MST3K, 3. Red Dwarf, 4. Harry Potter, 5. Star Trek, 6. Space Ghost

From Satellite News:

You-know-what may have finally frozen over. TVGuide.com is reporting that Universal will be re-releasing Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie on DVD on May 6th. While we haven’t received confirmation of this ourselves, this news comes from our old friend David Lambert, TVGuide.com Content Contributor and News Director of TVShowsOnDVD.com, so we’re pretty confident of its accuracy.

The new DVD will once again be a bare-bones release, with only the original theatrical trailer thrown in as an extra. But it’s reported that the movie itself will be a new anamorphic widescreen transfer with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound mix and a French Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track.

Yee-haw! I have the movie because I bought "The Movie and a Chunk" when they had carved up the Deep 13 set and were selling it off (so I bought an expensive, kitschy chunk of styro about three inches cubed, but hey. It's MSTie cred), but it's on VHS, one of the few things I still turn my VCR on for.

I would say "I guess Universal knows what side their bread is buttered on", except that I really don't think this is that big a slice of their profits. But yay anyway! *pencils in the date*
